CIVIL WAR

During the Civil War, the Morgan Horse was recognized as a valuable Cavalry horse and also as an artillery horse on both sides of the conflict. The "Black Horse Cavalry" of Virginia, mounted all on black Morgans of Blackhawk descent, were a fearsome troop. Union Generals Buford and Hatch remarked of the Vermont First Cavalry and its Morgan Horses that they were the best they had ever seen.
