  As the new Northwest frontier in the late 1790's, Vermont was largely covered by timber. Figure and many of his offspring helped clear the land of forests and till the soil for crops.

As the improved roads of the early 19th century changed the major mode of transport from saddle to harness, Morgans gained a reputation as the finest harness horses.

Prior to the Civil War Morgans were the major contenders in harness racing.
